Tri 4 Fun, June 9th

Saturdays race went well, got up on time, I set two alarms for 4:45 am. Left my place about 5:30 am. Julia and I where out in Rancho Seco Park by 6:15 for check in. She drove most of the way because I was having some stomach problems from the night before. I ate ice cream and brownies w/ grapes w/ the Tiggers (Junior high group), they definitely don't mix. Anyways, warm up and setup were fine in the transition area and I got there early enough to get a good position.

Pete actually didn't arrive till after 7 am even though I did give him a wake up call at 5:05 am. There were about 600 racers that day about 50 0f them were from the junior USAT Triathlon qualification series under 19 of age. The swim was good a cool 70 degrees water temp a little crowded at first in the beginning but it spaced out after the first buoy. Transition to the bike went well, I'm weighing the costs and benefits of wearing socks next time and if its worth the time it take to put them on. I had a fast bike leg a good 16 miles, but I could have gone a little bit faster and shaved off a minute or two. T2 was a breeze and that's when I lost the lead. Exiting the transition area the guy behind me was a "Mad Cow" a Davis tri-club, same age and we paced off each other the first half mile before he gradually took the lead. On the way back on the last mile another "Mad Cow" passed me and I couldn't get up to speed. Over all I was about a minute behind the first place guy in my age division and about 10 secs. behind number two. All in all I was happy w/ my performance but it ercks me to know that I had them in my sights and couldn't keep up. I definitely need to work on running after the bike : )

Congratulations Pete Sung on your first Triathlon!
