*Genesis 37-39

Devo Fuel: {God uses the Wicked}

When evil people affect our lives, we often wonder how God could permit such a thing. Humanly, the question makes sense. But it’s possible that we won’t ever understand the reason wickedness was allowed to touch us.

However, the Lord gives several assurances to sustain us during these times. First, God reminds us that His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Then, He provides insight into His character. He reminds us that “the Lord is good; His loving-kindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations”. And finally, our heavenly Father promises to work all things for the believer’s good.

We can also be reassured by the biblical record. There we often find the plans of the wicked actually furthering the Lord’s purpose.

For example, Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. God used this seemingly impossible situation for good. The young man was sold to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials. Joseph found favor in his service and was promoted.

Again, the Hebrew servant suffered when Potiphar’s wife had him imprisoned on false charges of adultery. The Lord also worked this circumstance for good. In time, Joseph’s actions in jail resulted in recognition, release, and promotion to a high position. He then was able to spare Egypt and his own family from the devastation of a severe famine.

We live in a fallen world. All of us will be affected by evil people. Knowing God’s Word and understanding His character give us hope and endurance to persevere during those times.
After reading the posts each week about Pete & Viv's mission to Cambodia I felt how could these wicked things be happening to these kids and why? I may never understand, but knowing that these children are in the Lords hands and you are sending your servants there to preach and teach your Word so that they may know You. You Lord are doing magnificent work there which calms my restless heart and gives hope to the few. Thank you for bringing Pete & Viv and the rest of the team back safely and toughening up your soldiers for the battle which lies ahead.

Praise God!

Hey D,

Nice post!

Suffering and evil in the world is a very tough issue to resolve. It definitely was one of the major barriers I had to believing that any kind of "loving" God could exist. I read a few books on the subject that helped give me insight. Probably the best was from Lee Stroebel, called "Case for Faith." He was not scared to ask the hard questions in that book. In fact Chapter 1 is titled, "Since Evil and Suffering Exist, a Loving God Cannot."

I'm glad you brought this subject up. It came up a few times in Cambodia. I think I'll read the book again to refresh my memory.

Thanks for keeping up with us through the blog, and also for your prayers!

Pete and Viv
