The race started at 9 am, with a half a mile swim in the cold American river, you start on the beach on the far side of the river bank near the intersection of the Sacramento and American River. The first half you're swimming up stream through murky muddy waters past a half submerged tree and shallow sand banks. This was an interesting swim because you are swimming against the current and in some parts it almost feels like you are swimming in place. (Note strategy: Drafting behind someone will save some energy, if you can find someone who swims slightly faster that you). Then you make a u-turn and head downstream with the current to the other side of the bank. Make your way up a steep shoddy wooden stair case to the parking lot under the overpass. I always struggle to pull off my wetsuit, especially when you are dizzy and disoriented from swimming horizontally to an abrupt vertical jog.
You then jump on your bike and head out of the park on to the Garden Highway where you have to do three loops. (Draft legal) This was a little tricky, when riding back into the park for the turn around, you have to make tight turns with other riders all around. Trying to make it through fast and safely with merging traffic.
After the bike portion you head back into the transition area and out onto the American River bike trail for a fast 3 mile out and back. (Note: Still a slow start, but was able to pick it up the last 2 miles.)
Times: Top 10 ranking in age division(18:00 Swim + 51:34 Bike + 24:15 Run = 1 hr. 33 min.)
