Yesterday, I was itchin for a long ride so I filled my water bottles w/ my mango clif shot drink. Checked my tire preasure and ate half of a cookies & cream clif bar and left my place about 4:50 pm as you might have guessed I'm a big supporter of all clif products.
Its about 3 miles from my place to the bike trail, I take neighborhood streets up to Sac State and get on the American River bike trail right by the river. I head North, destination Sunrise Blvd. Avg. spd 20 mph.
Back to the ride, things are going smoothly and I'm able to maintain a good pace. Things start to get exciting about mile 13. I catch up to 2 riders and what I like to do is draft behind them for a while, grab a sip of drink and cruise to replenish my energy. Well once I hit a straight aways I blow by them both and notice I have a bogie (An unidentified and possibly enemy aircraft) on my 8 o'clock and he's coming up fast. We have reached speeds of 22 mph and both of us are in aero postion flying through a curvy part in the forest. He gets the upper hand and tries to break away and I immediately crank down to follow.
We are now both moving @ 24 mph and maintain that constant speed for at least 3 miles. I've never been passed on the bike trail and beaten, but today I couldn't keep up after mile 16 I had to turn around. We passed Sunrise and I said my good byes as he continued down the trail. As I made the turn I hit a patch of sand and fell over scraping my elbow a little. It didn't hurt as bad as my pride, but I appreciated the commradery and challenge.
The ride back wasn't to eventful, I finish the other half of clif bar which I am trying to practice refueling on the ride and I could feel my body ach the last couple of miles.
Bringing my total milage for the day to 32 my longest ride!
